[There's a very, VERY long silence, and finally West says:]

Balloons.

[Another silence, then he clicks his tongue disgustedly.]

Of all the absurdities.

[CLICK.]

I don't know, Major.

It rather suited you.

At least it was entertaining. You did more than spend your time avoiding work.

Ah, no fond memories to take home?

Fortunately not. Other than I have not seen such religious zealotry in some time.

There was a brief resurgence of that mentality where I come from... but it was quickly squashed. [BY MASS SUICIDES AND INFECTION LOLOL.]

[What a fantastic world you come from, West...]

Probably for the best.

[Private]

I never confirmed that you received my note those few weeks ago.

I did.

Has everything been settled?

Oh yes. Though we will have to see what the future brings.

Vendettas can be such nasty business when both sides are effectively immortal. Have you received any threats?

Ah, but there is the problem. If it is by his hand, I am no longer immortal.

And no. But he did ask me "why," as if he expected me to give him a real answer.

Fair point.

Do you know who his allies are? If he even has any these days.

He asked me not to kill his warden once.

With the way the other wardens seem to regard him, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them acted against his warden before any of us.

Now wouldn't that be a blessing?

The Master's back. He could prove a potential ally for me.

They have no unity. It's only a matter of time before they turn on their own.

That madman is entirely too unpredictable to rely on.

Oh, I don't know. He seemed to do fairly well when we escaped. He's easy enough to control if you know the right buttons to push.

And which buttons, in your experience, are those?

[Chuckle.]

Well. You just have to make things fun. Games are a good way to introduce both an objective...and rules.

You say that as if it is a bad thing. Children are easy to train, easy to teach. Think of the possibilities if you could take someone and train them exactly the way you wanted. So that when you needed them...they would do what they were supposed to do.

Better than a soldier.

In the short-term, perhaps. But children also grow up, where soldiers are dependable.

Ah, now, if that were the case, my parents would have had a few grandchildren by now. [Instead, they'd have to settle with a grand-ferret. IF THEY WERE ALIVE.]
